President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to identify houses that have been completely and partially damaged due to adverse weather conditions, using a proper methodology, and to prepare a special method to efficiently obtain the accurate data required for providing compensation.
The President's Media Division said that the President gave these instructions at a meeting held this morning between officials of the Housing Development Authority and the Ministry of Finance at the Presidential Secretariat.
This discussion was convened to examine the process of providing compensation for houses damaged due to Cyclone 'Ditwa'.
The President emphasized the need to provide a long-term solution to the people living in vulnerable areas so that they do not suffer from such a disaster again, and has also instructed officials to identify accurate data for that purpose.
Officials of the Housing Development Authority have indicated that surveys conducted so far have confirmed that 1289 houses have been completely damaged and 44,574 houses have been partially damaged due to landslides.
The President's Media Division stated that a group of government officials, including Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Susil Ranasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, and others were present at the event.
